Choosing The Book ( Part Deux )

8 days and counting to the next bookclub (I don’t get out much)
It’s my turn to bring the book and as usual my offering has been piled up in the back room gathering dust for some time. It’s a risky strategy. Not because there’s any danger of being gazumped. It’s rather that there’s more time for the anxiety to build - There’s nothing worse than a look of mute indifference come the reveal.

It’s occasionally advantageous though. No choice is completely independent of the previous books. This is probably particularly the case if you’re following hot on the heels of a “top 10” - There’s surely a bit of pressure to up the ante. However if it’s already in the bag you save yourself that little bit of angst.

  1. I am intrigued. Not sure if you are anticipating Kavalier & Klay being in the Top 10?

I find it frustrating when even one person has read my chosen book already, so it either leads me to a very recent book, or something reasonably obscure.

I reckon there have probably been at least 20 occasions when at least one person has already read the chosen book at that meet. Maybe our reading habits are being partly shaped by the 70+ books we have read together already.

Maybe this is another factor that could be tracked on the magic spreadsheet...

  2. I couldn't possibly comment on Kavalier & Clay
It's a critically acclaimed Pullitzer prize winner but given "Beloved"'s reception that probably means nothing!

It was really just a post into "dead air" but is, although strained for effect, partly true.

  3. I thought I'd chosen something reasonably obscure this time so should have been safe but that was before I saw it on 3 for 2 at Waterstones.

I'll keep a log on these "already reads". If everyones choices are adapting to the group it should be on the increase?

  4. I am going to guess that I have already bought your choice then.... Though I could be wrong.
